Makriotika - a traditional hillside village in Cephalonia
Makriotika slumbers peacefully in the shadow of the Aghia Dynati and Kalon Oros mountains. Set against a luscious green backdrop, the spectacular panorama offers the most fascinating views across the wide verdant valley beneath it - easy to see why it is known locally as the 'balcony of Pylaros' . The mountains, small traditional villages, Aghia Efimia, the sea - all spread before you. Across the water mythical Ithaca and on really clear days you even can make out the mountains of the Peloponnese.
The scenery is at its most rewarding particularly for walkers and nature lovers in Spring and early Summer when innumerable shades of green are at their most intense, jostling for space with the yellow of Spanish Broom, the vivid red of poppies, the pure white of elder flower and the mellow blue-purple of wild lavender.
Authentically Greek, this place charms you slowly, completely in keeping with the unhurried feeling of the Island. Small red-roofed houses with flower filled terraces, to 'kefeneions', a taverna, a mini market, a baker and - as in each Greek village - a church.
The 'Platia' is the centre of this small community - a meeting and greeting place. In summer the taverna opens offering simple, unpretentious hospitality, lively discussions resume in the kafeneions, everybody enjoys the most beautiful days of the year in a harmonious atmosphere. Ideal conditions for blissful idleness unperturbed by the intrusions of modern life. Should the strain of complete relaxation ever make you restless, Aghia Efimia and the glorious Myrtos Beach are within easy reach.
Makriotika - strongly traditional - where it is not necessary to get off the beaten track to taste the flavour of authentic Greek life.
